São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Humanities: Modernism: disputes around the modern and projects of nation

This São Paulo School of Advanced Science will be held from July 3 to 7, 2023, with the objective of conducting a critical assessment of the centenary of the Week of Modern Art of São Paulo. The event takes place at the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB-USP) and is organized around four modules: politics, arts and literature, education and culture(s), bringing together scholars from various fields of knowledge (Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Gender Studies and Ethnic-Racial Relations, History, Literature, Music, among others). Cultural activities in other areas of the capital are also planned.

The event will bring together renowned young researchers and academics to reflect on the ambiguities and disputes surrounding modern and modernism in 1920s Brazil, set at the heart of assessments on the legacy of Independence, which then completed a hundred years, and the future projections advocated by political (and political-partisan) groups. Under the sign of the modern, projects of nation were clashed whose implications reverberated in revolutions (1930 and 1932) and coup d'état (1937-1945) in the long 1930s.

The School is aimed at masters, doctoral students, phD students and post-doctorates with completed or ongoing research related to modernism of the first half of the twentieth century, and that address objects related to the thematic axes of the School. Up to 100 researchers from public or private institutions, resident or permanently in Brazil, will be selected.

Registration must be made by April 14, accessing the event website to submit the required documentation in PDF and fill out the registration form. Write an email to espca.ieb@usp.br for more info on the School.
