São Paulo School of Advance Science on Renewable Energies


Antes da virada do milênio, ficou claro que era necessário buscar uma ou mais fontes de energia em quantidade, qualidade e disponibilidade para substituir as fontes tradicionais baseadas em carbono. Entre as fontes disponíveis, a energia solar, a biomassa, a hidrelétrica, a onda, a maré, a energia geotérmica e a eólica podem substituir com sucesso as fontes tradicionais de petróleo, gás e carvão.

Como no resto do mundo, o Brasil tem dispendido grandes esforços para desenvolver tecnologia e implementar novas fontes de energia. Dentro deste quadro, a Escola São Paulo de Ciência Avançada Energias Renováveis é uma oportunidade para que estudantes e acadêmicos participantes interajam com pesquisadores de renome mundial em um curso intensivo de duas semanas em São Paulo. Além disso, o ambiente acadêmico também proporcionará a oportunidade de iniciar ou continuar estudos técnicos-científicos no Brasil e, particularmente, em uma das universidades de nível internacional no Estado de São Paulo.

A FAPESP financiará passagens aéreas e despesas de permanência para estudantes selecionados para participar da escola. Estudantes de todo o mundo são convidados a aplicar. O prazo de candidatura é até 15 de abril de 2018.

    AHDA PIONKOSKI GRILO PAVANI

    Received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil, in 2008. She was a visiting scholar at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, in 2013. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Federal University of ABC - UFABC, Santo André, Brazil. Her teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels include Renewable Energy, Wind Power, Electrical Machines, Power Systems Analysis, and Distributed Generation. She has interest in grid integration of wind generation, power system stability with high wind power penetration, and smart grids. She has developed research projects funded by Brazilian official agencies and she has supervised over 10 graduate students.

    CHRISTIAN ZAHLER

    Christian Zahler is co-founder and Managing Director of Industrial Solar GmbH. Working in the field of solar thermal technologies since about 25 years, he started his “solar career” at the Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg. Later he moved on to work at research institutes in Portugal and Norway. In 1999 he returned to Freiburg and joined PSE AG, where he was responsible for the solar thermal department. Since 2009 him and Tobias Schwind are jointly leading Industrial Solar.

    CLÁUDIO ROBERTO DE FREITAS PACHECO

    Currently acts as Industrial Consultant in the specialties: Thermal Processes, Energy Conservation, Industrial Ventilation, Industrial Drying, Evaporation, Filtration, Pumping Facilities, Steam Utilities and Solar Energy. Thermal Conversion for Industrial Processes. Collaborates with SISEA-EPUSP-Lab. of Alternative Energy Systems and teaches the discipline Solar Energy Fundamentals at the Alternative Energies Course PECE USP, where it also supervises students in monographs on applications of Solar Energy.

    DEMETRIO C. ZACHARIADIS

    Naval Architect, MSc. in Dynamics of Marine Structures, PhD. In Rotordynamics & Tribology, Head of LEVE (Lab. of Wind Engineering/Laboratório de Engenharia do Vento), Assistant Prof. at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Polytechnic School/University of São Paulo. Currrent Research Activities: Dynamics and Vibrations of Wind Turbines, Elasto Hydrodynamic Lubrication, Dynamics of Reciprocating Compressors, Small Vertical Axis Wind Turbines and Distributed Generation; PhD. and MSc. supervisor.

    ERIC D. LARSON

    Larson’s research interests include engineering, economic, and policy-related assessments of advanced clean-energy systems, especially for electric power and transport fuels production from carbonaceous fuels (biomass, coal, and/or natural gas) and for efficient end use of energy. His work addresses technologies of relevance to developed and developing countries. Larson maintains long-term collaborations on energy and sustainability with colleagues in China (Tsinghua University and the North China Electric Power University) and in Australia (University of Queensland). He has also participated in collaborative research efforts with colleagues across the United States and in Brazil, Cuba, India, Italy, Jamaica, Sweden, and elsewhere.

    FRANCISCO TAVEIRA PINTO

    Full Professor of the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, Director of the Hydraulics Water Resources & Environment Division of DEC-FEUP and Member of the board of Water Resources Institute. Organiser of several international conferences and head of the Research Group of Sea Energy. He is also the Chairman of the Coastal and Maritime Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and International Secretary of the European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC-The Coastal Union).  

    GERHARD ETT

    Electrochemical processes: Fuel Cells, Lithium and Lead Batteries and electrolysis. Materials: Catalysts, Surface Finishing, High Temperature Materiais, Composits. Thermochemical Energy: Gasification, Pyrolysis, Torrefaction, clean gas process, Hydrogen production. Operation Director of Electrocell (since 2017). Vice-president  at VDI – German-Brazilian Engineering Association (2017 – 2019). Professor at FEI University. 

    HELENA CHUM

    Dr. Helena Chum is a Research Fellow in the National Bioenergy Center at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and a member of the NREL Research Fellows Council that reports to the Science and Technology Deputy Director. Her expertise is in renewable fuels, transportation systems, and international renewable energy activities including agriculture, forestry, bioenergy, bioproducts, biofuels, and biorefineries and sustainability. 

    JOSÉ AQUILES BAESSO GRIMONI

    His research fields are power systems protection, modeling and simulation, automation and smart grids. Since 1989 Prof. José Aquiles has been Associate Professor at Escola Politécnica from USP, and he has been involved in under graduation and graduation teaching and supervision activities. Nowadays, Prof. José Aquiles supervise eight graduate students(master and phd) and four undergraduate students that develop research activities related to his research fields. Since 2012 José Aquiles have been as under–graduate electric energy engineering course coordinator of Escola Politécnica da USP.

    JOSÉ LUZ SILVEIRA

    Ph.D., Full Professor, São Paulo State University - UNESP

    Executive Vice-Coordinator of  Institute of Bioenergy Research - IPBEN-UNESP (Head Office - Rio Claro Campus), Coordinator of Institute of Bioenergy Research and Head of Laboratory of Optmization of Energy Systems (Guaratinguetá Campus). Has experience in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on Energy, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, acting on the following subjects: Renewable Energy, Bioenergy, Cogeneration, Thermoeconomic Analysis, Fuel Cell, Technical, Economic and Environmental Analysis of Power Systems. 

    JOSÉ R. SIMÕES-MOREIRA

    He has research experience in the following areas: flashing and evaporation waves, natural gas liquefaction processes, natural gas usage, two-phase flow instrumentation, ammonia-water absorption refrigeration cycle,  Ranque-Hilsh vortex tube, Cogeneration processes, solar energy, solar fuels and alternative energy system in a broader sense. He has developed research projects funded by both official agencies and private companies. His teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels include Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Compressible Fluid Flow, and Renewable Energies. He has coordinated several extension courses on natural gas, refrigeration & air conditioning, and renewable energies. He has authored over 100 scientific and technical papers besides two books, one entitled "Fundamentals and Applications of Psychrometry "(in Portuguese) and the other "Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Distributed Generation" (2017). Presently he is an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering with focus on Thermal Engineering at  Escola Politécnica at University of São Paulo and coordinates SISEA – Alternative Energy Systems lab.

    KATHERINE DYKES

    Senior Engineer at National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Project lead for DOE Wind Energy Technology Office's Atmosphere to Electrons (A2e) focus area on Integrated Systems Design and Analysis (ISDA). Principle investigator for ISDA Systems Engineering & Optimization task. Project manager for DOE EERE Technology Commercialization Fund grant to demonstrate optimal yaw-based wake steering strategies in partnership with NextEra Energy Resources. Project Manager for DOE Wind Energy Technology Office's Wind Technology to Market (T2M) NREL focused on identifying industry technology needs and leading efforts to accelerate technology transfer from the laboratories to industry. Lead analyst on various DOE Wind Energy Technology Office's funded research efforts on wind turbine and plant technology trends in innovation. 

    LUÍS A. B. CORTEZ

    Coordinator of the Energy Planning Center-NIPE-UNICAMP between 1997-2002, and 2012-2013, and Coordinator of International Relations of UNICAMP between 2002-2009 and Vice-Rector of International Relations of UNICAMP 2013-2017. At São Paulo State Research Foundation-FAPESP was Adjunct Coordinator for Special Programs 2009-2016. Coordinated projects in Bioenergy such as a study on sugarcane ethanol expansion in Brazil to substitute 10% of the world gasoline consumption; the FAPESP Public Policy Ethanol Project in R&D for sustainable ethanol production - book “Sugarcane Bioethanol: R&D on sustainability and productivity” published in 2010 (Jabuti Prize). Coordinated the Project “Roadmap on Sustainable Biofuels for Aviation in Brazil” – FAPESP/Boeing/Embraer Project, book published in 2014. Presently coordinates the FAPESP/LACAf-I Project to promote bioenergy in Latin America and Africa and is also involved in organizing a new initiative in Bioeconomy in São Paulo State, the Agropolo Campinas-Brazil where is the Adjunct Executive Secretary.

    MAGDI RAGHEB

    He has been recognized with the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Everitt Award for Teaching Excellence (2013). The Award honors a faculty member for outstanding undergraduate teaching: “A teacher who stands out and is remembered with respect, affection and admiration long after the student leaves campus.” He has developed and taught since 1979 courses in Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering, NPRE, Mechanical Engineering, ME, and Computational Science and Engineering, CSE, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. These include: Wind Power Systems, Energy Storage Systems, Nuclear Power Engineering, Safety Analysis of Nuclear Reactor Systems, Nuclear and Radiological Safety, Fuzzy Logic and Its Applications, and Monte Carlo Simulations. He serves on the "Science Policy Advisers" of the "Thorium Energy Alliance' as a board member.

    MARCELO J.S. DE LEMOS

    He is Full Professor at ITA, founder and head of the Computational Transport Phenomena Laboratory - LCFT and the newly established Competence Center for Energy – CCE. He has set a new mathematical framework for novel treatment of turbulent flow, heat, and mass transfer through permeable media. Prof. de Lemos' research interests involve computational thermo-fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, porous media, thermal engineering, aerodynamics, gas turbines, advanced fossil and renewable energy systems (wind, solar, biomass), high performance computing, turbulent reactive flow, computational mathematics, combustion dynamics, modeling and simulation of thermochemical systems, fuel cells, gasification processes and CO2 capture and storage technologies.

    SOTERIS KALOGIROU

    Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Sciences and Engineering of the Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, Cyprus. For more than 30 years, he is actively involved in research in the area of solar energy and particularly in flat plate and concentrating collectors, solar water heating, solar steam generating systems, desalination and absorption cooling. Additionally, since 1995 he is involved in a pioneering research dealing with the use of artificial intelligence methods, like artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms and fuzzy logic, for the modelling and performance prediction of energy and solar energy systems. He has been a member of World Renewable Energy Network (WREN), the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) and International Solar Energy Society (ISES).

    STEFAN KRAUTER

    Professor and Chair, University of Paderborn, Paderborn, Germany. Chair of Electrical Energy Technology – Sustainable Energy Concepts. Co-Director of Competence Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (KET).

    SUANI TEIXEIRA COELHO

    A Chemical Engineer, Master and PhD in Energy in the Graduate Program in Energy from the University of São Paulo, where she is currently lecture, thesis advisor and coordinator of the Research Group on Bioenergy. She has been coordinator of projects funded by FAPESP (Funding Agency of Sao Paulo), ANEEL (Regulatory Agency on Electric Energy) and CNPq (Federal Council for Research), among others. She is thesis advisor at the Integrated Graduate Program in Bioenergy (USP/UNICAMP/UNESP) and member of the Graduation Committees of the two programs. She was member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Group on Energy and Climate.
