SUMMARY:São Paulo School of Advanced Science in Obesity
LOCATION:Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (FCMUnicamp)
DESCRIPTION:

Obesity affects more than 650 million people worldwide. The World Health Organization projects that, without significant progress in prevention and treatment, by 2030 there will be more than 1.2 billion people with obesity.

Grounded in recent advances in the cellular, molecular, and neurobiological mechanisms that regulate energy balance — and in response to the urgent global rise in obesity — the São Paulo School of Advanced Sciences in Obesity offers comprehensive training that spans epidemiology, genetics, epigenetics, nutrition, and emerging preventive and therapeutic strategies.

The school will be held at UNICAMP, the State University of Campinas, where graduate students and early career researchers will experience two weeks of courses, interaction, connection and scientific discussions with renowned scientists in the fields of medical sciences, physiology, biology, genetics, evolution and healthcare.

From historical, scientific facts to cutting-edge technologies and analyses of coming developments, the School will elucidate the underlying mechanisms of obesity through a wide range of topics, including epidemiological aspects and the nutrition transition; energy balance, mitochondria and brown adipose tissue; gut-brain and muscle-brain connections; gut microbiota; the near and far future of pharmaceutic therapeutics, and more.

Students and researchers developing research projects at the undergraduate research, doctoral, or postdoctoral levels in areas related to the SPSAS theme will be eligible for application. A total of 100 spots will be available, distributed equally between projects carried out in Brazil and projects conducted abroad.
