SUMMARY:São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Emerging Pollutants (SPSAS-EP)
LOCATION:Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas/Unifesp
DESCRIPTION:
Emerging Pollutants (EPs) are chemical substances and compounds with potential threats to the environment and human health, which are not yet regulated by laws or monitored. The consumption, presence and distribution of EPs in the environment compromise the fulfillment of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From the perspective of One Health, EPs are a topic of interest because they threaten planetary health. In Brazil, knowledge about the presence of EPs is still quite limited, although the pollution problem is worrying.

The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Emerging Pollutants aims to contribute to the training of professionals capable of dealing with the topic, developing and deepening technical knowledge and broadening the vision to apply multi and interdisciplinary approaches. The training trajectory will begin with the context of the EPs in the planetary limits, going through prediction and prioritization techniques, analytical challenges, collection and monitoring strategies, remediation and treatment and, finally, the regulatory dimension. Among the emerging pollutants, emphasis will be placed on pesticides, pharmaceuticals, PFAS, PFOS, illicit drugs, micro(nano)plastics and antimicrobial resistance genes.

During the 12 days of school, activities such as theoretical and practical classes, field trips, case studies, round tables, technical lectures and a Hackathon are planned to foster intellectual and collaborative exercise, which will be deepened in small groups tutored by teachers.
